How I got a Tax refund at Airport (My experience in Tbilisi, Georgia)

I purchased a charger for my laptop from Tbilisi and got a tax refund while coming back from that country. So here I am going to share my experience of claiming the tax refund if you are travelling as a tourist in a foreign country. In many countries, foreign tourists can claim the refund for the tax they paid to the government against the things or services they purchased. Often known as Value added tax (VAT) or Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Tax refund procedure for foreign tourists

  1. Approach the tax refund counter which is mostly located at exit ports like airports, seaports or land ports.
  2. Produce the valid bill on which you are going to claim the refund.
  3. Show them your passport and visa. Keep a photocopy, you may need them.
  4. Sometimes you may be asked to show the product which you have purchased.
  5. After scrutiny Tax officials will stamp the bill and refund the tax amount or may ask to visit another counter to get the amount in cash

How did I get a Tax refund at Tbilisi Airport

While visiting Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, I had to buy a new charger for my laptop (MacBook Air). I got a valid bill for the charger I bought from Apple’s authorised seller. The bill mentioned clearly the actual cost of the charger and the amount of tax. The charger cost me around 310 Lari which is equivalent 8070 Indian Rupees. While exiting Georgia from Tbilisi airport, I went to the tax refund counter and got the bill stamped. I was sent to a currency exchange counter which took the copy of the stamped bill and refunded around 900 Indian Rupees.

My first day in Tbilisi | Metro Fare, Timings | Veg Georgian Food

This video is based on my journey from Borjomi to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. After reaching Tbilisi central station I took the Tbilisi Metro from Station Square metro station. In this video, I have shared information on Tbilisi metro fare, timings and how to travel in Tbilisi Metro or Subway. You will also see Liberty square metro station, Liberty square mall, vegetarian Georgian Dishes, cost of vegetarian food in Tbilisi, etc.

Borjomi to Tbilisi in a Marshrutka

After getting a ride from Akhaltsikhe to Borjomi, I tried to hitch another ride from Borjomi to Tbilisi. However, the plan failed. Didn’t get any ride. Then I got a Marshrutka (minibus) to Tbilisi. Bus Fare from Borjomi to Tbilisi was 7 Lari in September 2018. There is also a train connection between Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe.

Station Square, Tbilisi

The bus dropped me at Station square in Tbilisi. The main railway station of Tbilisi is located adjacent to this metro station. I took Tbilisi Metro to reach Liberty Square Metro station.

Tbilisi Metro details

Tbilisi Metro is the part of Tbilisi Transport Company which also runs buses, funiculars, ropeway, etc. One smartcard called ‘MetroMoney’ is valid on all these modes of transport. The smart card costs 2 Lari and each trip costs 50 Tetri (100 Tetri = 1 Lari). However, after completing a trip if the passenger uses another mode of transport within the 90 minutes of swiping the card the next trip won’t be charged. So in other words after tapping the card at the machine the passenger can take unlimited trips for the next 90 minutes. Metro is available between 6 am to 12 am.

Liberty Square Mall

After reaching Liberty Square Metro station I went to the Liberty Square Mall which is in the same building. I bought an adapter for my MacBook Air from an authorised seller. The mall is quite big and offers almost everything from famous fashion brands to grocery supermarkets, food courts to a multiplex cinema.

Vegetarian Georgian food

I had Khachapuri and Lagidze water at the food court of Liberty Square Mall. The restaurants offer vegetarian options as well. Khachapuri is a popular Georgian dish. Watch the video to know more about both the things I had.
